Meet Dr. V

Vernetta K. Williams, Ph.D.

In 1999, Vernetta entered a doctoral program in English on a full fellowship that allowed her to focus on her studies. Having earned her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in four years and her M.A. in English from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in a year and a half, Vernetta expected to obtain her Ph.D. within four years.

Life happened, and Vernetta faced the reality of being "ABD" (All But Dissertation) year after year. Finally, eight years after starting the Ph.D. program, Vernetta became Dr. Vernetta K. Williams. Academically, she persevered through four dissertation advisors, including the unexpected death of her first advisor.

After her fellowship ended, Vernetta obtained a position as a Department Chair at a private college, working 50+ hours a week while writing her dissertation. Lacking the financial support of her fellowship, Vernetta continued to work long hours while writing. In the midst of work and academic demands, Vernetta relocated an ill family member from another state to live with her. The family, financial and personal challenges persisted while the daunting task of writing a dissertation remained Vernetta's reality. Without the mentorship of ONE faculty member knowledgeable about higher education culture, Vernetta still would be "ABD" today.

Since becoming Dr. Williams, Vernetta has merged three passions in order to service graduate students and authors through Chrysalis Consulting. As a child, Vernetta loved reading and constantly immersed herself in books.  Her three degrees attest to her lifelong devotion to reading and writing. The autobiography is one of Vernetta's areas of specialty, so she excels in helping people write about their experiences. Through her studies, Vernetta mastered various forms of academic writing. Teaching is another of Vernetta's passions; she absolutely enjoys the process of facilitating knowledge, explaining complex concepts and giving practical "how to" steps. Teaching at the college level for more than 10 years (in the classroom and online) allowed Vernetta to become skilled in sharing information in a way that others can learn. Lastly, through her eight year doctoral journey, Vernetta gained a passion for helping students overcome obstacles to graduation. So, equipping graduate students with the resources to become scholarly writers motivates Vernetta.

Through Chrysalis Consulting LLC, Vernetta shares her writing expertise with graduate students and those desiring to publish quality books so that they can accomplish their professional, personal and educational goals. Whether you need a writing coach, editor or thesis/dissertation project manager, Dr. V is pleased to assist you!
